Matcha Madness

What is Matcha? & Why you may want to try it!

Matcha - aka that scary green drink - drink that tastes like grass - the healthy alternative to coffee - the antioxidant powerhouse.  All of these things are quite true!

But let’s dive into the specifics:

What is Matcha?

A form of green tea, usually high grade, ground green tea leaves into a fine powder.

Benefits of Drinking Matcha:

It is indeed high in antioxidants which helps boost and keep the immune system strong and can help brain function.

Caffeine Content of Matcha:

Matcha is caffeinated and provides a more subtle amount of caffeine than the classic cup of coffee.

1 espresso shot ~ 70mg vs. 1 matcha serving ~ 40mg

How is Matcha served?

It can be served a variety of ways, but the base of the drink is the matcha powder itself mixed very well with some hot water. More traditionally in cafes now it is served as a “matcha latte” which can be hot or iced. This includes the matcha powder mixed well with a little hot water, and then topped with a milk of choice, either steamed or cold for iced.

Should I Sweeten Matcha?

It can be sweetened with a variety of options of course. A bit of sugar, maybe honey, or a flavored syrup like lavender which is a house favorite here at Fundati. The drink itself can be quite bitter, so most people opt for some sweetener to cut that. If you are having the matcha latte style with milk, you will already get some sweetness from this as well, which could work too!

Our Conclusions on Matcha:

In light of being adventurous, we think you should try it at least once!

It is a completely different taste profile to coffee and a unique form of tea that can provide you with a solid caffeine pick me up, antioxidant boost, and tasty beverage to sip on hot or iced.

Our Fundati Recommendations:

  • Iced lavender matcha with whole milk

  • Hot Oat Milk Matcha with honey & cinnamon

  • *New menu item* The chaga matcha - we can’t decide if we like hot or iced more, just go with your mood!
